Cézanne and Beyond
Saturday morning I went to the Cézanne and Beyond exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Yesterday was the last day, way to go for procrastination. We arrived at 11am and didn’t wait in the lame line, which was excellent. In the future I will go all will call for my museum exhibits.
I’m not super knowledgeable about the art world but I certainly enjoy art. For this reason I appreciated the comparisons of Cézanne’s work with contemporary pieces from other artists, I really felt it helped illustrate his unique view. The subject matter covered in most of the pieces was boring (still lifes of fruit, bathers) but I was blown away by the techniques used.
I really enjoyed Cézanne’s work before he started to move towards cubism. It was as though he looked at normal and boring subjects but he made them overflow with his personal style. His pieces weren’t abstract yet they spoke as more than the simple bowl of fruit used as the model.
This exhibit also introduced me to Jasper Johns who I’ve been aware of but never really exposed to. Ironically I’d have to say my favorite works were those by Matisse and Picasso which were also in the exhibit. Of note was “La Reve” sans elbow hole made by the owner, Steve Wynn.

Overall I felt the exhibit was interesting and informative, Saturday mornings are excellent for good company and impressive art.
